Looking to start a new family tradition this Christmas, while getting a little exercise? Try Skating in the Park, the outdoor ice skating rink in downtown Huntsville.
An ice rink? Outside, in the South – with real ice? You bet, rink coordinators say. The rink uses a mat system, where the floor is charged with liquid coolant to make ice. Once the mats are in place, a skim coat of water is sprayed onto the mats. The ice is painted white, then layered with more water to make more ice. The floor is connected to a chiller that circulates the fluid to keep the ice frozen, even in balmier temperatures.
At the rink you’ll find benches for those in your group who would just like to watch, as well as warming stations. Concessions are available, including hot dogs, nachos, funnel cakes and of course hot chocolate! See the full menu here.
For information about other events at the rink, see the Skating in the Park Facebook event page.
Skating in the Park will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Why not make a new tradition to go to the rink before or after Christmas church services? We hope you’ll enjoy this new skating tradition this year with your friends and family.
